End of 2020 Season

Winter is here and we are officially closed for the 2020 season. What a year it has been! Last year, At the end of the 2019 season, we reflected over the year and were anxious and excited to see what new things we could do in the orchard in 2020. Boy did we ever get the opportunity this year! We were stretched with new guidelines and mandates just to open that were complex and difficult to facilitate. We would come up with a new plan, just to find out the guidelines had changed the next day and new plans needed to be imagined. We looked at it as a fun challenge. It kept us busy and our minds thinking and problem solving.

Overall, GREAT things came out of our new guidelines. A new structure was built and now we can’t imagine running our orchard without it! We imagined and engineered new bucket cleaning stations for our employees that have made work so much easier. Liners for the buckets streamlined transport home for our customers. More sinks were added to the entrance of the orchard that made it easier to wash before and after picking , and increased sanitizing is never a bad thing!

We are extremely thankful we were able to open and stay open for the entirety of the season. We are also extremely thankful for our staff this season. They stepped up and had more work to do then in any other season out here in the orchard. They spent hours everyday sanitizing and helping make things safe for customers visiting the farm as well as each other working at the farm. They wore masks when they had to, even when it was 90 degrees out. They graciously walked customers through our process to keep wagons and buckets clean. And successfully ended the season without a single employee getting sick or a single case being traced back to our farm through customers.

Thank you to all of you who ventured to our farm this year and joined us in some outdoor fun! For those of you that weren’t able to join us this year, we look forward to welcoming you back next season in 2021!

How to Store Your Apples

We have some great storing apples ready to be picked! We thought we would give our best advice for how to make those apples store for as long as possible.
Your very first step to a long lasting apple is to TAKE IT OUT OF THE BAG! We added bags this year to be compliant with new guidelines, but have realized you may not realize that bag should just be for transportation. Apples release ethylene gas, and if they are in a plastic bag, that gas will make them ripen much faster. So start by taking those apples out of those bags!
Next, you want to think of a cool dark place. Root cellar is best, but for those of us without a cellar, a garage can suffice. Just make sure your apples won't be getting hit by the sunlight from a window everyday, that will make the temperature of your apples fluctuate and ripen faster. A cardboard box is great for storing. Ideally, the apples would be in a single layer.
For those of us who do not have much garage space on shelfs, a garage fridge will do as well. But there is a bit of moisture in a fridge so this method might last 2-3 months instead of 3-4 months.
The varieties we have that are great for storing are Braeburn, Cripps Pink, Granny Smith, and Gold Rush.

We plan to be open through Monday, November 23rd, so make sure to get any last apples you needed this week!
